| John McLoughlin Interviewed by Classic Business Magazine of South Africa. |
| By Grace Lee, 11/1/2009 11:01:04 PM |
|
| Mr John McLoughlin, MD of J2 Software, which specializes in securing data in laptops and computers, was recently interviewed by Classic Business Magazine of South Africa. Mr McLoughlin stressed that it is essential for computer users (especially laptops or notebooks) to have multiple levels of authentication before gaining access to their machines. With laptop thefts on the increase, more and more highly confidential data are lost or stolen. The true value is not the machine itself, but the data stored in it. He said that one such device which provides such additional security is the T3 SecurityKey. It is physical device that is basically an ignition key to your laptop or computer. Without the T3 SecurityKey the user cannot gain access to any data stored in the machine. Hence, if the machine is stolen, the highly confidential data will be remain intact. | Heartland Payment Systems Hacked |
| By Unknown, 1/22/2009 12:28:58 AM |
|
Identity thieves install spyware to monitor transactions from the inside In a press release timed to coincide with the inauguration of President Barack Obama, credit card processor Heartland Payment Systems announced Tuesday that it suffered a grievous security breach sometime in 2008, allowing hackers the opportunity to steal credit card information on what is possibly more than 100 million accounts. Heartland is the sixth largest payment processor in the country, and specialized in transaction processing for small-to-medium-sized restaurants and retailers. According to Wired’s Thread Level, it processes more than 100 million transactions a month. Federal investigators determined the source of the breach only last week. Spyware installed somewhere on the company’s internal network that sniffed unencrypted credit card transactions as they passed through Heartland’s systems. “Heartland believes the intrusion is [now] contained,” read’s the press release. Actual damage assessments are still in progress, and the real question is just how much data the malware was able to capture. Heartland CFO and president Robert Baldwin, in an interview with BankInfoSecurity.com, said his company was confident that the only data picked up was cardholders’ names and credit card numbers. Baldwin would not speculate on the actual number of credit card accounts exposed. The company’s press release, however, could confirm that the breach had no effect on the company’s other services, which include payroll and check processing, micropayment solutions, and its “recently acquired” Network Services and Chockstone processing platforms. Similarly, cardholder’s addresses, PIN numbers, and other personal data were also unaffected. The unknown hackers’ sniffers were able to pick up credit card numbers because the data is sent unencrypted over Heartland’s internal network, a policy that Baldin justified as necessary “to get the authorization request out.” Late last month, various blogs reported a number of mysterious, fraudulent sub-25-cent transactions appearing on readers’ and bloggers’ credit card statements, coming from a nonexistent company called “Adele Services”. While it appears these events are unrelated, some consider the timing suspicious. “There is no hard evidence that the company's data leak was responsible for the sudden surge of mysterious microtransaction fees we reported in early December,” writes Ars Technica’s Joel Hruska, “but the timing is extremely coincidental. The December attacks were never successfully attributed to any single company or credit card, but instead affected a seemingly unrelated group of people.” “Heartland may — and I do stress may — have been the hidden link between them,” he said. |

| US Regional Bank Hacked - Thwarted Hack Exposes Score |
| By Fara Liza Bashah, 8/11/2008 9:51:30 PM |
|
By John Leyden
Hackers infiltrated the systems of Commerce Bank and accessed the records of 20 customers, the US regional bank said today.
The attack by persons unknown was partially thwarted - but not before a database of 3,000 records was hacked into and the data of 20 exposed. Compromised data included personal information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, phone numbers and, in a few cases, Commerce Bank account numbers, the Columbia Business Journal reports.
Security staff shut down the attack and called in police to investigate after uncovering the breach a week ago. The FBI is investigating.
The method used in the attack is unclear, and something the bank will be keen that it stays unclear, to avoid the possibility of copycat attacks. There are many avenues of assault, of which one common tactic is to exploit web application vulnerabilities by using SQL injection attacksto access information of back-end databases.
Commerce Bank has apologised for the breach to customers affected by the attack and is offering to pay for two years' credit monitoring. Concerned customers can call +1 877 279 4046 for more info.
The Midwest bank operates 360 branches in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas and an online banking business.

| Is your information protected? |
| By John Mc Loughlin - MD, J2 Software, 7/18/2008 1:43:19 AM |
|
[ Johannesburg, 11 July 2008 ] - In today's technology-driven world, it is amazing how many people do not take the steps to protect their information. Specifically, when the information is mobile.
It is evident that people finally understand the value of their information. This includes private information, business-related information and sensitive data belonging to clients. This private and confidential information has an immeasurable value and has disastrous effects on people and businesses if the information is lost or falls into the wrong hands. Corporate losses are made up of actual monetary loss, legal fees, hefty settlements, identity theft or loss of reputation and client trust, to name a few.
"Ask those around you what they do to protect their assets and you will get a multitude of answers. This includes burglar bars and alarm systems for homes or businesses; transponder immobilisers and tracking systems for motor cars, armed response, etc. What about your information? Is this not also a prized and most valuable asset worth protecting?" asks John Mc Loughlin, Managing Director of J2 Software.
John Mc Loughlin - Director of J2 Softwares
"I have seen that generally the corrective measures are only put in place once data loss has already occurred," says Mc Loughlin, "rather than taking some simple steps to protect information from the outset."
You have to ask yourself if you are taking the necessary steps to protect your confidential information. Is your data locked up and protected? "All users need to ensure that their data is instantly locked-down to prevent unauthorised access. A perfect scenario is to provide an 'ignition-key' for your information; without the physical device your data is protected, and so is your identity. The solution must include industry strength data encryption to ensure that even in the extreme case of theft your information remains safe." Mc Loughlin adds. "Finally, you must also ensure that this is encompassed in a single solution which is easy to use for all levels of IT Users, such as the T3 SecurityKey. The people with the most sensitive company information are not always the most IT savvy and what is the use of a comprehensive mobile data protection solution if the person carrying the data refuses to use it?"

| Data for 800,000 Job Applicants Stolen |
| By Fara Liza Bashah, 10/22/2007 11:26:55 PM |
|
A laptop containing unencrypted personal information for 800,000 people who applied for jobs with clothing retailer Gap Inc. has been stolen.
The computer contained social security numbers and other sensitive information belonging to residents of the US and Puerto Rico who applied online or by phone for jobs from July 2006 to June 2007, the retailer said in this list of frequently asked questions. Details for applicants living in Canada were also exposed, although they didn't include social insurance numbers.
The laptop was stolen from the offices of a third-party vendor the Gap hired to manage applicant data. The Gap didn't identify the vendor or explain why it failed to encrypt such a large number of applicants' personal information.
Gap joins scores of other organizations that have lost sensitive information entrusted to them. The US Department of Veterans Affairs, IBM and VeriSign have also been dogged by laptops or storage tapes that weren't encrypted and were later lost or stolen.
More recently, high-stakes data breaches have resulted from criminals who found ways to exploit weaknesses in corporate networks. Last week, TD Ameritrade said hackers infiltrated a database containing social security numbers, birth dates and account numbers on an undisclosed number of clients. And in August, cyber gumshoes discovered a Trojan that stole more than 1.3 million records from people who were looking for work through job recruiter Monster.com.
By Dan Goodin in San Francisco
Few companies disclose details of their data-retention policies, such as whether computers containing sensitive information are encrypted. This is partly because the release of too much information can tip off criminals. But we can't help thinking the lack of disclosure also gives lawyers wriggle room in the event something goes wrong.
Indeed, Gap's FAQ didn't say whether customer records, applicant information and other sensitive details in its possession are encrypted, or whether it plans to enforce such a policy in the future. The Associated Press, however, quoted Glenn Murphy, the company's CEO and chairman saying the storing of applicant data without encrypting it ran contrary to Gap's agreement with the third-party vendor.
Gap is contacting applicants based in the US and Puerto Rico who had their social security numbers exposed. It is also arranging for them to receive one year of free credit monitoring. The company said it is unaware of any of the data being misused.
